Karim Benzema appeared to pick up an injury in the Clasico defeat to Barcelona last week.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is set for a spell on the sidelines after the club confirmed he has suffered a hamstring injury.

The club said tests on Saturday confirmed the problem, but they did not reveal a timeframe for Benzema’s return, saying “his recovery will continue to be assessed.”

However, Marca reported that the forward was set to miss two to three weeks, which would rule him out of La Liga games against Celta Vigo and Villarreal and potentially Deportivo La Coruna, as well as both legs of the Copa del Rey round of 16 clash with Numancia.

Benzema showed signs of a problem in the 3-0 Clasico defeat to Barcelona last week and left the game midway through the second half.

The injury comes amidst a five-game goal drought in all competitions, including the Club World Cup. He last scored on Nov. 25 and has only two La Liga goals all season.

He was the only player not to participate in Real Madrid’s public training session on Saturday, conducted in front of fans as the club celebrated their five trophies in 2017.

“We felt the warmth of the people. If people are excited, we are too,” Casemiro told Real’s website. “We are happy with the year we have had. Today’s we worked hard now we must enjoy, because the year has been spectacular for us. 2017 has been the best year of my life.

“I’m happy because I’m playing at Real Madrid. I enjoy every day, in training too. I love scoring goals, although I am a midfielder. It is important for the team.

“In the dressing room, we know that it has been the best year the club has had in our history. We are going to fight for every title and we will continue trying out best next year.”

Raphael Varane also looked back on 2017, adding: “We are happy because people relished it. It is an opportunity for them to see us train and it is a special one.

“It has been a fantastic year, with five title wins and personally I am very happy with this year. I ask that 2018 be as good as 2017, let’s enjoy and play at our best level. “
