Lucas Torreira has said Arsenal are “one of the most important” clubs in the world, but indicated that his move to the Emirates Stadium from Sampdoria would not be finalised until after the World Cup.

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero confirmed this week that the club have accepted a €30 million offer for the Uruguay international, but the deal has dragged while he is on World Cup duty.

“No, I don’t know [if a move to Arsenal will happen soon],” the Independent reported Torreira as saying. “At the moment, the most important thing is playing for my country.

“Arsenal are a good team, one of the most important in the world, but at this moment I am focused on playing for my country.”

Uruguay are through to the round-of-16 after winning their first two group matches, with Torreira coming off the bench in both, meaning Arsenal could have to wait longer.

Meanwhile, striker Danny Welbeck has said Jack Wilshere can “take himself to the next level” after the midfielder decided to leave Arsenal.

Welbeck — the only Arsenal player in England’s World Cup squad after Wilshere was left out — said he could understand the decision.

“He’s got to be positive with it, grasp the opportunity with two hands and keep improving and take himself to the next level,” the Mirror reported Welbeck as saying.

“I’m still going to be very close to him, even though I won’t see him every day. Things change so quickly in football and I’m sure he’ll be missed, particularly by the fans.”

West Ham, Crystal Palace and Wolves are are reportedly among the clubs interested in Wilshere.
