Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he was “not surprised” by his side’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Liverpool and England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain says he has undergone successful knee surgery.

The 24-year-old, who was ruled out of the rest of the season and this summer’s World Cup after suffering a knee injury in the Champions League semifinal against Roma last month, shared a photo of himself recovering from the operation.

Alongside a picture of him in a hospital bed, Oxlade-Chamberlain wrote on Twitter: “Watching the boys in Rome last week taking us one step closer to something very special.

“Knee surgery was a success and the hard work has already begun.”

Liverpool meet Real Madrid in Kiev two weeks from Saturday, when they will look to win a sixth European Cup.

Oxlade-Chamberlain had been in contention to earn a starting spot for England in Russia this summer, after playing in five of the Three Lions’ six World Cup qualifiers in 2017. He also started both of England’s friendlies in March against Italy and Netherlands.

The former Arsenal man had been named in England’s 2014 World Cup squad as a 20-year-old, but he suffered a minor knee injury in a warm-up friendly and did not play in the tournament.

A source told ESPN FC that Oxlade-Chamberlain had personally called England manager Gareth Southgate immediately after the incident to discuss the injury.

Oxlade-Chamberlain made 42 appearances for Liverpool this season since leaving Arsenal in the summer.

PA Sport and ESPN FC Liverpool correspondent Glenn Price contributed to this report.
