Antoine Griezmann and Atletico Madrid already have their sights set on the round of 16 after scoring four away goals in Copenhagen.

Diego Simeone was “very happy” with his side’s performance in their 4-1 comeback win at FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their round-of-32 Europa League tie on Thursday.

Atletico spotted the hosts a 15th-minute lead, when Viktor Fischer back-heeled from close range. But goals from Saul Niguez, Kevin Gameiro, Antoine Griezmann and Vitolo made it a comfortable night for the La Liga club.

And Simeone said after the match: “I’m very happy with the performance.

“We became more secure after the equaliser and all in all it was a complete performance.

“FCK came out as we expected and got the goal they were hoping for, but the most important thing is our performance.

Atletico Madrid hit four past Copenhagen after an early deficit.

“Griezmann performed like he has done lately; the way we played, with a lot of combinations, suited him well, and he is in a good period at the moment.”

Centre-back Diego Godin was back in action after having reconstructive surgery on his face following an ugly collision with Valencia goalkeeper Neto earlier this month.

Of the Uruguay international’s performance, Simone said: “Very good, he is very strong in character. And he played as if he had never hurt himself.”

Meanwhile, Copenhagen boss Stale Solbakken said his side were guilty of leaving Atletico too much room in which to play on the night, which doomed their chances of advancing in the competition.

“If you make mistakes like the ones we made in the first 10 minutes you can lose against any team,” said Solbakken, who was also in charge when Copenhagen lost at home to Atleti in 2007.

“Atletico are definitely one of the best teams we have ever faced. We are stone dead now. We are not alive. Maybe some players who didn’t get a chance tonight will get one on the big stage in Madrid.”
